based on interviews of participants in the search and rescue
missions disclose that belongings, papers, etc. were recovered from
the wreckage. Some of the recovered items were shown on television.
-'Izvestiya' also alleges the existence of a warehouse where the
recovered items are kept, as well as the existence of a list of such
items and the existence of pictures and films of the wreckage taken
by divers who participated in the Soviet search and rescue mission.
To ensure that the facts on the disposition of personal effects are
brough out, we urge the Russian government:
-To release any information in its possession about the
discovery and disposition of personal effects of the KAL 007 victims;
-To permit and facilitate interviews with search participants
and, if necessary, a search of the site of the wreck.
Memorial Service
To commemorate this tragedy and as a sign of conciliation, we urge
the Russian government:
-To permit and facilitate annual memorial services on the crash
site with access given to all family members of the victims;
-To assume the cost of these services, including the cost of
the families' transportation, housing and maintenance;
-A permanent memorial service planning group should be formed
including representatives of the Russian government and
representatives of the Japanese, Korean and American Families
Associations.
