Francis Cornish and I visited the Daya Bay Nuclear Power station on 3 November. We were accompanied by Mr C K HO, Managing Director of Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Company Ltd (HKNIC), Dr Jacques Pretti, Senior Nuclear Technical Adviser on secondment to HKNIC, and Peter Kelly, Manager of the 'GECA' s Hong Kong Office.

At Daya Bay we had two meetings with Mr Zan Yun Long, General Manager of the GNPJVC, the first a semi formal session on arrival for about 45 minutes and the second over lunch. Peter Chow, First Deputy General Manager of the GNPJVC and HKNIC's man at Daya Bay was present throughout. We also had a full tour of the conventional and nuclear islands and a meeting with GECA staff.
We made this visit against a backdrop of comments in the press and by the Hong Kong business community that GECA were underperforming. Stories that leaking gaskets and faulty condensers were causing serious delays have been gaining currency here..
Mr Zan delivered a full (but unscripted) briefing. He stressed that the GNPJVC had a very good working relationship with GECA. Even though there had been a number of technical hiccups over the years, GECA had always acted promptly to find solutions and that was much appreciated. He and his colleagues äiä, however, harbour some concern about the performance and reliability of the turbines when operating at full power. Early indications were however encouraging.
