HONG KONG/SWEDEN IPPA: COMPARISON OF ENGLISH AND SWEDISH TEXTS

POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION

1.

We note for the record that the English text shows "Hong

Kong" precedence and the Swedish text "Swedish" precedence. For the formal signing, texts in the converse precedence will

presumably also be required - as well as a Chinese text in each

precedence.

2.

The concluding formula speaks of the Agreement being "done in

triplicate"; is this necessary? There are indeed three languages

but only two Contracting Parties. If each Party has a full set

(three languages) in its own precedence, that should suffice, we

think. Hence "done in duplicate

3.

We note that agreed changes have been made in the initialled English text, as described in the letter of 4.10.93 (Norström to Edwards), plus one typographical correction in Article 10(2)(a).

We confirm that the agreed changes are reflected in the Swedish

text.

4.

Generally speaking, the Swedish text is very closely aligned

with the English. A few points of detail arising from our

comparison are set out below, in order of appearance in the text.

Some of them are of an editorial or typographical nature.

PREAMBLE, SECOND SECTION

As mentioned in the letter of 6.10.93 (Norström to Edwards) the

expression "greater investment" has been rendered by "fler investeringar" (= more investments). The choice of the plural noun may have been based on stylistic considerations but "more

investments" does not altogether convey the sense of the English,

which suggests "more and bigger investments". One way of bringing

this out would be to translate "increased investments" (ökade

investeringar).
