TAIWAN: "GREY AREA" ARMS SALES: AIRFIELD DAMAGE REPAIR EQUIPMENT
PROBLEM
1.
The Minister of State asked for a statement on our policy on
defence sales to Taiwan. An opportunity to consider this in
relation to, a specific case has by chance occurred. We have received an application for preliminary approval for export to
Taiwan of equipment for airfield damage repair. This equipment would fall marginally outside our normal guidelines on exports to
Taiwan.
RECOMMENDATION
2.
I recommend:
(a) that the Minister of State endorse the recently-approved
guidelines; and
(b)
recognising this particular equipment as "grey area"
that we should nevertheless approve this application.
