He then worked for his Ph.D at the University of Columbia in US in 1973-76. After that, he returned to HK and has been teaching at the Polytechnic.

He graduated from HKU in 1971 with a degree in sociology, and then got a Ph.D from Oxford University in 1975. Then he taught in HKU as a lecturer, and was later promoted to professor.

He then studied sociology and English at the Baptist College, and got a scholarship to study mathematics at Baylor University in the US. In 1985, he was elected to the Legce through the electoral college. He was appointed an Exco member in 1986.
