The Director of the French Institute in Taipei
announced that henceforward the Institute would issue visas,
with applications processed in 24 hours. Cargo flights between Taiwan and France began on 11 September and passenger flights
are due to commence on 5 November (CT, UDN, 25 Sept).
32.
CNA on 26 September issued a statement protesting at the retraction by the UN authorities of its press credentials. It said that CNA was a private not an official news
organisation, contrary to the reason given by the UN authorities
for withdrawing its credentials, ie that CNA was the official
agency of a non-member territory (CDN, UDN 27 Sept).

Three frigates leased from the USA have arrived at
Kaohsiung on 27 September. The frigates are reportedly being
leased for 5 years for US$14.5m with a total project cost of
US$236m (CT, Commons Daily 28 Sept).

(UDN 3 Oct) reported that the Italian Foreign Ministry
had announced that a direct air route to Taiwan would begin
operation soon.

UDN (5 Oct) reported that the Netherlands had agreed to
resume sales of spare parts for submarines earlier sold to
Taiwan.
36.
Following a visit to North Korea, Kuomintang LY Caucus
Secretary-General Liu Fu-pan announced that Taiwan and North
Korea would exchange representative offices. But the Foreign Ministry said that more consultations would be needed.
North Korean officials visited Taiwan in early October. (Commercial Times 5 Oct).
