A new AIDS control centre in Guangdong (as well as one

in Yunnan) is to be built as part of an increased programme for

the surveillance of the disease for which the central government

has announced additional funding of Y3.5m (CD 16 Nov).

B48.

The number of people from other parts of China residing

in Guangzhou is now 1.45m, 40.3% of permanent residents of the city. In 1980 it was only about 300,000. The number of people

from other parts of China in Zhuhai is 250,000 (47.5% of

permanent residents); in Shenzhen 2.6m, including 1.01m in the

SEZ, while people from other areas represent 60% of the residents of the non-SEZ area of Shenzhen. People from other

areas represent 90% of offenders investigated by Public Security

departments in Shenzhen and 74.7% of offenders investigated in

Zhuhai over the last two years (SD 14 Nov).

Speaking to the donation ceremony for the opening of the first stretch of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Zhuhai Expressway, Gordon Wu said that he expected the second stretch from

Guangzhou to Zhuhai to be completed in 1996. Officials

attending the ceremony included Qin Wenjun of NCNA Hong Kong and former provincial Vice-Governor Kuang Ji, described as Director in Chief of construction. The ceremony was held in the

Huangtian area (SSZD 15 Nov).

B50.

A meeting of the provincial People's Congress Standing

Committee held from 8 to 16 November passed 7 sets of

regulations including regulations on controlling triad

activities (the first of their kind in China) and regulations on product quality inspections. Draft regulations on the

management of brokers and draft regulations on the auctioning of

assets were also considered (SD 9, 17 Nov).

B51.

SD and WWP (17 Nov) carried a report on commercial deals concluded with Germany during Chancellor Kohl's visit to Peking, including the purchase of equipment for the Guangzhou Metro valued at more than US$300m.
