Guangdong now has over 150 labour exchanges at county

level and above. So far over 170,000 people have received job

placements through the labour market (SD 20 Oct).

B41.

Over 200 people were admitted to hospital in a case of food poisoning originating from fresh vegetables contaminated with pesticides at Haizhen, Jiangmen, on 29 October (SD 1 Nov).

A decision recently adopted by the provincial Party

Committee and government on strengthening control over the

management of cultural activities in society was published in SD

of 3 November. The decision enumerates various measures to curb

gambling, the sale of pornographic literature and other activities "harmful to the masses and especially to young

people".

A long article by Provincial Governor Zhu Senlin in SD

of 4 November applauded Deng Xiaoping's recent call for more rapid development. Zhu referred to Guangdong's average growth

rate of 13.3% from 1979 to 1992, adding that with a growth rate

of over 20% this year, the province would reach the point of take-off of Asia's "Four Little Dragons". A speech by Xie Fei on the study of Deng's works was published in SD of 10 November.

SD (5 Nov) published an apology by the editor of its affiliated paper, Southern Weekend, for inaccurate reporting.

Activities to commemorate the centenary of Mao Zedong's

birth include an exhibition at the provincial Museum to be held from mid-December to mid-February, displays of photographs of

Mao, calligraphy and arts and crafts, report meetings about Mao's life and the development of his thoughts, and

revolutionary karaoke competitions (SD 7 Nov).

Following earlier loans totalling Y7.3m, Shenzhen has

extended further loans totalling over Y10m for industrial

projects in Qingyuan (SSZD 11 Nov).
