have family ties with overseas Chinese
It is also the place with the greatest development potential in Guangdong, where three of the four key development areas of the province in the 90's are located (and two of them are in Zhuhai, i.e. West Zhuhai and
and Hengqin Island). The project, if successfully implemented, will improve traffic condition and strengthen economic ties between Guangdong and Hong Kong. It is,
therefore, instrumental in the development of the two places. Also, a road link with Macau will definitely be a plus factor for enhancing the role of the "golden triangle" of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. This is very favourable for the development of all three places.
The project will be beneficial to further development. of container trade in Hong Kong. Container trade is presently the most promising business in transportation industry, and Hong Kong's container throughput is at the world's top. Most. of China's container exports have to go through Hong Kong, but inconvenient road link in the past has stalled full development of the business. This project will certainly light up a rapid development in the container trade industry of Hong Kong and China.
Project Alignment.
The western end of the project is located at the junction between the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Eastern Expressway, the Zhuhai-Jinfeng Expressway and the Gangwan Road jn Jinding Township, Zbuhai. The bridge will extend eastwards to Tuen Mun via Jinxing waterway, Qiao Island, Lingding waterway, Inner Lingding Island, Fanshi Waterway and Black Point in West Kowloon (sic). The whole length of bridge is 52 km (excluding the section from Black Point to Huanggang, which is 18 km long), of which 28 km is covered by the main bridge and 24 km by approach bridges and highways.
Construction Standards
the
According to the preliminary design, the bridge, with a width of 38 metres, will provide 8 regular traffic lanes plus 2 emergency traffic lanes, which will allow a traffic speed of 100 km/hr. Adopting a suspension bridge structure for its major sections, the bridge will have a main span of 1000 1300 metres and a headroom of 60 - 65 metres. There will be a total of four grade-separated interchanges at both ends of the bridge and on the two midway islands, while water pipes and electricity cables will also be provided for the project. The schedules traffic flow will initially be 12000 vehicles/day, which will be increased to 20000 vehicles/day in the second year
