Points to Make

We were concerned by recent Chinese statements that if the

Governor stuck to his present position, it would affect economic

and trade relations between Britain and China. Put out

statement making clear regret.

Overall, seems to be a mixed picture. Some reports that British business is being lost. But equally, some major

contracts still being signed with British firms. Jardines experience?

- We will be monitoring our trade and economic relations with

China very closely. China may be constrained by international considerations, in particular her relationship with the US. Evidence of discrimination on political grounds would play very badly for China, eg in the MFN debate.

- On political scene, will review the timing of introducing

legislation after the Easter recess. We want talks with the

Chinese. Noted strong support in community for this. Aim to

get back to more cooperative relations with China if we can.
