Comparative Statistics for the Periods (1 January - 31 July in 1992 and 1993)

From January to July 1993, the Commission recorded a total of 3,142 reports, in comparison with 1,725 for the corresponding period in 1992, indicating an increase of 82% (or 1,417 more reports).

The increase was attributable to a 37% increase in corruption reports, from 1,303 to 1,783 and a 222% increase in non-corruption reports, from 422 to 1,359.

The increase in corruption reports was across the board. Those against the police rose by 40% from 254 to 356, those against other government departments by 35%, from 322 to 436, those against the private sector by 34%, from 691 to 928 and those against public bodies by 75%, from 36 to 63.

So far this year, the pattern of corruption reports shows that 20% concerned the police, 24% other government departments, 52% the private sector and 4% public bodies.

The number of pursuable reports recorded for 1993 was 1,195, an increase of 20% over the corresponding figure of 993 for 1992.

A total of 192 persons have been charged in 1993, 4% (or 9 persons) less than the figure of 201 for the same period in 1992.

The number of convictions resulting from those prosecutions which were completed during the relevant periods were 131 and 125 respectively, a decrease of 5%. 34 persons have been cautioned compared with 68 during the corresponding period in 1992, a decrease of 50%.
