YOUR TELNO 165 TO BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: PROPOSED REGIONAL CONFERENCE OF INFORMATION OFFICERS IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA, FAR EAST AND

AUSTRALASIA

1. In principle, we are in favour of our UK-based Information Officer attending such a conference and we are looking into the costs of the various venues you suggest. Because of unforeseen circumstances which have prevented our travelling as much within China this year as we had planned, we may be able to cover the costs of attendance from Peking from our local travel budget.

2. Hong Kong would be our preferred location as it would enable the officer based in the China Trade Unit who carries out information work in South China to attend without incurring travel and subsistence costs. Our budget would not stretch to both officers and the officer in Peking would have to take precedence as she leads on information work throughout China.

3. A conference would be particularly useful as the job of Information Officer has only just been reinstated after a gap of two years. The new officer would be interested in exchanging ideas with other Information Officers and also discussing the issues which affect information work in China.
