PRESENTATION BY BBC WORLD SERVICE TELEVISION (WSTV), 1200
ON 12 MAY
1.
BBC World Service Television (WSTV), launched in 1991, continues to expand its range and is making an increasing impact on international TV audiences, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. It aims to make the service available on satellite for at least part of the day throughout the world by the end of this year. Although WSTV, unlike the radio World Service, is a commercial operation and receives no official funding, Information Department keeps in close touch with it; and of course it can, and does, call on support in overseas markets from the commercial and information sections of posts.
2.
There is every reason to think that WSTV's importance in international news reporting, and in the projection - and perception - of Britain and British views overseas, will continue to grow. We know there is considerable interest in the FCO in WSTV's progress. When Mr Alston visited the WSTV headquarters and studios (at White City) recently he was given an impressive presentation on WSTV's development and future plans; and it was agreed that it would be useful if a similar presentation could be made at the FCO itself for the benefit of a much wider audience of senior staff.
