"AUSTRALIAN": SUPPLEMENT ON HONG KONG

1. The Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong may already have passed you a copy of the supplement on Hong Kong from the "Australian" newspaper of 30 April. In case not, a copy is enclosed. This struck me as a reasonably dispassionate and helpful piece making the points that:

Hong Kong is a vital Australian trade partner: already seventh largest export market (if the 3 Chinas are aggregated together they would rank second, just below Japan);

Australia thus has a close interest in future Hong Kong prosperity;

Australia has been a vocal supporter of the Governor's democratic reform proposals;

but Hong Kong's destiny is inextricably tied to the Mainland.
