We have been able to get the UNHCR to highlight the problem of their debt to Hong Kong in their fund-raising activities, and we are pressing major donors to include an element for this when considering this year's contributions.

- No truth in rumours that the UNHCR is withdrawing from the camps. The UNHCR Chief of mission has said his organisation will remain in Hong Kong for as long as is necessary to deal with the boat people problem.

UK Financial Contribution

From 1989 to date the UK has contributed more than £56 million towards a solution of the problem. We expect to make contributions totalling £10 million in 1993/94. (There is also the considerable efforts put into solving this problem by the British Embassy in Hanoi).

US Trade Embargo (Defensive)

- We continue to encourage the US to lift its trade embargo against Vietnam as soon as possible.

DEFENSIVE

Sir Percy Cradock

- Sir Percy Cradock is now a private individual and is travelling to China in that capacity.

-

He is not carrying any message from the British Government to the Chinese authorities. And, as he has said himself, he will not be discussing Hong Kong with any of the officials he meets.
