I very greatly appreciated all the efforts made to supply your text to the Oriental Daily News in time for last week's anniversary issue. was greatly valued in ilong Kong, as I expect you will be hearing directly from them, and from all accounts, your words were given a very bold display.

For my own part, I enjoyed reading your well-phrased comments on the state of play.

As I daresay you know, the Oriental is more concerned with reader-welfare issues than taking any high-profile view on Hong Kong politics, but this does seem to me to wake it a useful vehicle for occasional "cross-party comments from here the progress of events in long kong. These I pursue and will continue to pursué, since there is often a wide gap between perceptions there and here.

Your own contribution was of course by far the most distinguished we have had or envisaged having and I do thank you for it.

With best wishes,
