Thank you for your letter of November 2nd. I was surprised by the response of your officials, as Mr Healy is sure and I certainly asked him - to interview you and ask you to write a piece for us.

He mentioned he was offered Mr Goodlad as a substitute only after being told you were unavailable.

Be that is it may, I was glad to note your assurance that we are not treated as secondary to the London press, and I know you have been extremely busy with other matters.

I would point out, however, that I believe Mr Patten's Governership is now at

at a decisive stage when the people of Hongkong need constant reasurrance and a feeling that there is strong support for what is happening from London.

I therefore place on record that I am extremely keen for an interview with you conducted by Mr Healy, or, perhaps preferably, a Q&A where I submit written questions.

And if you are writing for the British Press on Hongkong, if you could be so kind as to get someone to let me know, I can negotiate for it before publication.

Many thanks and best regards,
