Funding Scheme for HK Students in UK to Drop

The Hong Kong Government

and the British

Government have jointly decided to phase out the Joint

Scheme for Hong Kong students in the United Kingdom

starting from 1994-95.

Funding

"Students already on courses covered by the scheme will continue to be eligible to apply for assistance until

their existing diploma or first degree courses have been

completed," said the spokesman.

Set up in 1983, the scheme provides financial

assistance to needy Hong Kong students pursuing tertiary

education at National Diploma and first degree level in the

UK.

"With the expansion of tertiary education in Hong

Kong, it is expected that some 24 per cent of our young

people in the relevant age group will have access to

first-year first-degree and sub-degree places in 1994-95,"

he pointed out.

"Therefore, there is no strong reason for sending

Hong Kong students to study overseas at public expense,

added.
