Funding Scheme for HK Students in UK to Drop
The Hong Kong Government
and the British
Government have jointly decided to phase out the Joint
Scheme for Hong Kong students in the United Kingdom
starting from 1994-95.

"Students already on courses covered by the scheme will continue to be eligible to apply for assistance until
their existing diploma or first degree courses have been
completed," said the spokesman.
Set up in 1983, the scheme provides financial
assistance to needy Hong Kong students pursuing tertiary
education at National Diploma and first degree level in the
UK.
"With the expansion of tertiary education in Hong
Kong, it is expected that some 24 per cent of our young
people in the relevant age group will have access to
first-year first-degree and sub-degree places in 1994-95,"
he pointed out.
"Therefore, there is no strong reason for sending
Hong Kong students to study overseas at public expense,
added.
