The

Chancellor said that he regretted that he had not had an

opportunity to meet Sir William Purvis at the IMF/IBRD Annual

Meetings in Washington. He had gone to the meetings a little

cynical about their value; he came back with a more mellow

opinion. Sir William Purvis agreed that the scale of the occasion was quite ridiculous. Bankers did, however, use the opportunity

to get to meet each other; and to try to get money back from, and
