WHAT ARE WE DOING TO PROMOTE TRADE WITH TAIWAN?
ANY PLANS TO VISIT TAIWAN (defensive)?
TAIWAN IS IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNER. WHY NO OFFICIAL REPRESENTATION (defensive)?
In the UK the cutting edge of trade promotion is the Anglo Taiwan Trade Committee (ATTC), an action committee of the Asia Pacific Advisory Group, which receives a grant- in-aid from the British Overseas Trade Board of £218,000 to promote the market vigorously. It is developing a high profile strategy to promote the opportunities under the Six Year
Development Plan.
ATTC organised a
successful major
The
mission to Taiwan in November.
In Taipei we have
upgraded our unofficial trade office to reflect Taiwan's increasing economic importance. The job of the new team is to identify opportunities and help to launch firms into the market. The associated education office (Anglo Taiwan Education Centre) and Visa Handling Unit are doing very well.
Because of Taiwan's growing importance as a trading partner for the UK and its growing importance in the world economy, a private visit in the course of this year would be valuable. But plans are not yet firm.
We do not recognise Taiwan as a state. We acknowledge the position of the PRC that Taiwan is a province of China. We recognise the government of the PRC as the sole legal government of China.
