UK TRADE PERFORMANCE?

Taiwan is one of the UK's fastest growing export markets: (if required) export growth slowed

last year to 4.2% for the period January to

November; UK exports had grown by 170% between 1986 and 1991.

In November ICI opened a plant for the manufacture of PTA feedstock or synthetic textiles - their largest investment anywhere in the world in the past five years.

We could do better. My Department's strategy has been developed with this in mind. Taiwan has ambitious infrastructural plans, the Six Year Development Plan, which offer excellent oppor-

tunities for British

companies. Our other

export priorities are

environmental protection/

pollution control,

education and quality

consumer goods.
