your letter of

7 October. I am most grateful for your kind offer of assistance with my visit to Australia next year.

I am at the moment waiting for an outline proposal from the Australian Consulate-General here as to items that could be included in the visit programme. They have promised to let us have this next week and I shall seek

your advice on their suggestions.

The Australian Consul-General has made clear that I am being invited as a guest of the Australian Government and that Senator Gareth Evans will be my host. They wish to emphasize Australian-Hong Kong relations and indeed, as Governor of Hong Kong, that is the emphasis that I need to give to the visit as well.

I am very grateful for your readiness to adjust your diary to help with my visit programme but, so far as I can see at the moment, we should not have any cause to trouble you personally. I am of course most grateful for the offer of assistance from your deputy, David Fall.

I am naturally sorry that, having missed you once in Nigeria, I shall miss you again in Australia, but I'm sure we shall have some opportunity to meet at a later date.
