LONDON-BASED HONG KONG JOURNALISTS ATTENDING LECTURE BY GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG
1.
You will know that the Rt Hon Chris Patten is giving a public lecture at Newcastle University on 11 November on the subject "Liberty and Economic Reform".
2. I am arranging a two-day visit to Newcastle for London-based Hong Kong journalists who will attend the lecture and at the same time learn about Hong Kong economic investment in the area. Journalists from Korea and Taiwan have also been invited to look at investment from their countries in the North East. There will be briefings at Newcastle University, the Northern Development Company (NDC) and Tyne and Wear Development Corporation to learn about economic regeneration in the area, as well as visits to Hong Kong, Korean and Taiwanese companies and meetings with the local Hong Kong Chinese community. The visit has been substantially funded by the University and the NDC.
3"
Mr Patten has agreed to meet the journalists briefly after the lecture, at which point they will no doubt question him on current issues. I am liaising with John Chuan of the Hong Kong Government Office on this matter and representatives of the University have been in touch with Government House in Hong Kong.
4.
Journalists from five Hong Kong newspapers have so far applied to come on the visit and there may well be more by the end of the week. I will send you a copy of the programme which will have details of the journalists attending and their appointments in the North East.
