FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (FAC): CHINA INQUIRY:

REQUEST FOR EVIDENCE FROM SECRETARY OF STATE

1.

The Clerk to the FAC has said that the Committee would like an evidence session with the Secretary of State, early in the new year, to complete its inquiry into "political and economic relations between the UK and China in the period up to and beyond 1997".

2. Since the inquiry got underway in July the Committee has heard evidence from Mr Goodlad and FCO Legal Advisers. The Committee visited China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in October. During December the Committee will take evidence from, among others, Lord Howe and three of our former Ambassadors to China.

The Committee hope to report in February. The Clerk has therefore suggested the morning of 25 January for an evidence session with the Secretary of State. I understand from the Diary Secretary that a session would be possible between 1100 and 1230 that day. I should be grateful to learn whether I may offer this slot to the Committee.
