FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (FAC): CHINA AND HONG KONG INQUIRY
1. The FAC are conducting an inquiry into political and economic relations between UK and China in the period up to 1997 and beyond. As part of this inquiry the Committee is visiting China, Taiwan and Hong Kong from 12-22 October 1993.
2. It is customary on such visits for Members to take the opportunity of looking at the effectiveness of the FCO's resources on the ground. With this in mind the FAC Clerk has asked for short briefs on the following subjects:
a) Manning levels
b) Accommodation
c) Security
d) Staff Welfare (including medical/environmental
problems)
e) British Council
3. I should be grateful if RFD and action copy addressees could let me have briefs as requested on Peking, Shanghai, ATTC Taipei, and Hong Kong (BTC and JLG) by 24 September.
