FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE VISIT

1 Peter Ferdinand will accompany the Committee throughout the visit, and will travel with the Shanghai group when the members split into two in China. Grateful if hotel bookings could be made as appropriate.

2.

Any

For Peking. Thank you for your telno 1248. Committee appreciate the difficulties over seeing a draft programme. further progress? Regarding your telno 1298, the Committee would prefer to Leave this as free time. Perhaps the minibus could be Left at their disposal.

?

3. For Hong Kong. Please refer to para seven of Peking telno 1101. Have the necessary train tickets been booked? Grateful for details, including cost, to pass on to the Clerk.

For Taipei. Committee is generally content with the outline programme in your telnos 223 and 224. The proposed "politically correct" dinner on 20 October Looks fine, and the Clerk expects the Committee to be content with the joint reception beforehand as suggested. Members will definitely hope to meet the President, Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

5. The Clerk has indicated that the overlap with Mr Needham's visit may cause problems. The suggestion of a joint meeting with the Minister of Economic Affairs is unlikely to go down well with the FAC. Members would be unhappy if they could not meet the KMT figures and leading businessmen because of the Minister's visit. The Committee would also wish to meet the new Kuomintang Alliance. Grateful if you could do what you can to meet these suggestions, and for any advice on how we can best minimise overlap with the Minister's programme.
