FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE INVESTIGATION INTO RELATIONS WITH CHINA

1. Dr Peter Ferdinand of Chatham House told me yesterday evening that he would be one of two advisers appointed to give support to the Foreign Affairs Committee in their forthcoming investigation into relations with China. He would continue this role even after his time at Chatham House ended (in September) and he returned to Warwick University.

Dr Ferdinand added in confidence that the other adviser would be Ms Elizabeth Wright, the head of the Far Eastern Service of the BBC.

2.

Both are of course very well-known to the Office. Ms Wright has also been a family friend over the past 20 years.

3. I learned separately at the FED reception that the Chinese had expressed unhappiness that the FAC were including Taiwan in the scope of their report. But I did not have the chance to speak to Mr David Howell at the party, and you may have heard more directly from him.
