FROM JAMES LEE FOR COI RADIO TECHNICAL SERVICES

TRANSCRIPT OF EVIDENCE GIVEN BY

FCO MINISTER OF STATE, MR. ALASTAIR GOODLAD

TO THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS SELECT COMMITTEE

IN LONDON

ON WEDNESDAY, 14 JULY 1993

SUBJECT: RELATIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND CHINA

UP TO AND BEYOND 1997

TRANSCRIPT B (CONTINUED FROM TRANSCRIPT A)

MR. JOPLING:

Are you

I wonder if I could press the question I asked.

absolutely confident that the decisions of the Court of Final

Appeal in Hong Kong after 1997 will be taken on the same basis of

common law as exists now and will exist in the Hong Kong courts

after 1997?

MR. ALASTAIR GOODLAD:

I think I can give an unqualified "Yes" to that. Hong Kong's laws

will remain in force, the Court of Final Appeal will be an

integral part of Hong Kong's judicial system enforcing Hong Kong's

laws.
