HONG KONG: EXTENSION OF CHIEF JUSTICE'S SERVICE
Problem
The Governor has proposed extending by two years the service of the Chief Justice, Sir T L Yang.

Background

The Governor has invited our views on his proposal to
extend the service of the Chief Justice, Sir T L Yang for two years. Sir TL Yang was appointed Chief Justice in 1988 and will reach normal retirement age of 65 on 30 June 1994.
Under Article XVIA of the Letters Patent the Governor can
extend his service for a specified period or periods of not more than five years in total. The Governor believes that
Sir T L Yang is keen to continue beyond 1997.
The

Governor therefore proposes to offer him initally a two-year extension to 30 June 1996, to give a breathing space to identify a successor.
