A visit to a DTI Regional Office. That in Birmingham could be visited in one day, and could include a speech to a local Chamber, and a visit to the Birmingham One-Stop Shop (BOSS).
(vi) Overseas Visits I said that South America had been well covered by Mr Garel-Jones and the Secretary of State recently, Africa was of little interest and the Far East had been exhaustively visited by Mr Needham. Mr Goodlad agreed but he said he was going to Hong Kong in early November. I said he could perhaps combine that with a visit to Moscow and a couple of our posts in the Former Soviet Union (Tashkent and Almaty). He thought this was a good idea. I mentioned the Far East Commercial Officers' Conference in Hong Kong on 25/26 November, important conference for us. It would add lustre to it if he could chair part of it. He agreed but wondered about the logistics. You agreed to look at dates. I would be grateful if you could take the proposed visit forward, together with Eastern Department and Far Eastern Department, keeping the JD

I suggested that he need to make the following visits in suport of and to get to know our commercial services:
(a) BTIO New York, Seattle and Washington (Mr Pellew has already written to Washington about this).
(b) Düsseldorf: this could be a 24-hour visit, perhaps combined with making a speech to the British/German Chamber of Commerce.
(c) The Former Soviet Union, where demands on posts were high but resources low.
(vii) Industrial Visits in the UK I said that I thought that he should call on and have presentations by British Aerospace, Rolls Royce, one of the Japanese car transplants (Nissan, Toyota or Honda), ICI and one or two other successful exporters (JC Bamford, British Steel, Glaxo). The JD will arrange this.
(viii) Other Government Departments Mr Goodlad should take part in the seminar which Mr Needham wants with Ministers responsible for export promotion matters in OGDs. This is currently scheduled for Wednesday 7
