From The Minister of State
Dear the
Thank you for your letter of 18 November enclosing a copy of one from your constituent Mr James Holding of 42 Hill Rise, Cuffley, Herts, about the detention of Gendun Rinchen and Lobsang Yonten by the Chinese.
Their cases are well known to us, and we are already pursuing them with the Chinese authorities, both bilaterally and together with our European partners. Following a visit to Tibet by a group of EC Ambassadors in May, the EC issued the enclosed statement about Tibet on 1 June. This included a call for the release of Gendun Rinchen and Lobsang Yonten. The EC followed this up with Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen in New York in late September and most recently with Vice-Foreign Minister Jiang Enzhu on 29 October. Gendun Rinchen and Lobsang Yonten were also included on a revised list of individuals of concern which Douglas Hurd handed to Qian Qichen in July and raised again with him in October. We shall continue, with our EU partners, to pursue these cases as well as the wider issues.
