LONG-TERM COMMITMENTS (continued)

P.02

A review of the staffing requirements of the BTC and the new Consulate-General was conducted by the MRS in June. Their recommendations on staffing, summarised in the annexes to this section, have in principle been accepted but with a caveat that BTC staffing requirements will depend on a continuing assessment of priorities and will remain under regular review. The MRS review should not therefore be taken as the final word on certain aspects of the Consulate-General, four years in advance of its

establishment. On the commercial side, it is expected that UK prospects in major projects in Hong Kong and southern China in the next 10 years will be better than anywhere else in the world.

We have bid for a DSS project officer for FY 94/95. The need for further resources later for major project and other commercial work could well arise and in the anney to this section, we bid for an additional DS7 and DS9 commercial officer, notionally for 1997 although that date could come forward, and for an LEI commercial officer (the latter will be included in a local budget bid closer to the time). This is in addition to the upgrading of the DS6 post to DS5.
