Transport operators are
responsible for
delivering the vegetables to the stalls and shops. Some retailers also use these operators as buying agents.
Emergency Arrangements
21.
These would, as far as possible, follow the pattern of the arrangements for fish described in paragraph 20. The Food Unit would need to establish close cooperation with the Vegetable Marketing Organization and the main associations of market stall holders and hawkers.
22.
If land routes from the NT are interrupted, the Food Unit would consider bringing vegetables to Cheung Sha Wan and Kennedy Town by sea.
D. POULTRY
23.
Live birds are sold in Government temporary markets at Cheung Sha Wan and Western Reclamation.
24.
Arrangements for the conveyance of birds to the markets and fresh provisions shops are similar to those for vegetables.
Emergency Arrangements
25.
These might have a lower priority than measures for other fresh produce. However, depending on the situation, a system for bringing buyers and birds to and from the wholesale markets might have to be established. In any case, every attempt would be made to keep the markets running for locally reared poultry.
SALES TO THE PUBLIC IN AN EMERGENCY
26.
Retail outlets will have to be chosen carefully by the Food Unit so that the supply to them and purchases from them can be regulated, and so that the public has an adequate opportunity to obtain essential provisions.
27.
In general,
gazetted
public markets (i.e. those run by Urban Services Department, Regional Services Department and Housing Department) will be selected. Certain fresh provision shops may also be
chosen.
