Those who fail to produce acceptable proof of identity are either illegal immigrants or overstayers. Their particulars, fingerprints and photographs will be taken for record purposes.

A team (not part of the Docuemtnation Section) of 54 Immigration Investigation Officers will examine and determine their immigration status. This team will comprise five Senior Immigration Officers, 35 Immigration Officers, 6 Senior Immigration Assistants and 8 Immigration Assistants. It will be divided into five groups and be able to process 400 cases a day, provided that the detainees are confined to an accessible

location.

After examination, overstayers including those from China will be taken to the Victoria Immigration Centre (VIC) for detention pending removal. The VIC, which has accommodation for 443 detainees, is staffed with a team of 45 Immigration Officers, comprising two Senior Immigration Officers, 20 Immigration Officers, 8 Chief Immigration Assistants, 7 Senior Immigration Assistants and 8 Immigration Assistants. This team is able to process 400 cases for removal a day.

Illegal Immigrants from China will be removed to the Immigration Detention Centre at San Uk Ling pending repatriation to China. The San Uk Ling Centre can accommodate up to 600 persons. The present staff of six Immigration Officers will be able to process 105 cases a day.

12.

The strength of the unit of Immigration Investigation Officers will be reinforced proportionately to the number of illegal immigrants and overstayers required to be processed.

Transportation of detainees to the VIC and San Uk Ling will either be provided by the Police or by the Controller Government Land Transport Agency.
