in 1995. After 1997 it will deal with the
Chinese MFA Office but also handle the SARG's business with Consulates. It will absorb one APA job, the Protocol Department, and the overseas visitors section of GIS.
Nomenclature

It would be simplest and most appropriate, given that the PA will head the unit, for the new PA's Office to retain its
present title.
Role
5.
The PA's Office 1995-1997 will handle the following
main areas of work:
(a) general political advice to the Governor;
(b) China relations: Many everyday liaison functions
will be devolved into the nascent Mainland Affairs
Office in the Secretariat, but the PA's Office
will continue to handle the Governor's own
(c)
(d)
relations with China and represent his interests
where China policy is concerned.
intelligence collation, handling and assessment:
including liaison with British agencies and
dealing with all UK Eyes Only material;
garrison/military matters: none of which will be
left to the Secretariat.
(e) security, staff and personnel matters:
including
sensitive British Nationality Scheme matters, positive vetting, etc.
(f) political asylum/defector cases.
