2(g) All papers listed in this section can be destroyed before the changeover, though any current/on going cases at the time (probably few) will need to be handed to the BTC. 2 (h) Records from 1.1.83 should be transferred to the BTC. Records prior to 1.1.83 should be destroyed.
2 (i) 2 (j) These should be passed to the BTC or alternatively sifted by a UK based DS officer prior to the transfer - who may be able to authorise destruction of some of it. An indication of the quantity of such files would be useful.

We sympathise with you and realise that there is a large volume of paper and computer data to be sifted, but all the interested agencies feel that this is the minimum amount of records which will need to be retained in Hong Kong. There is no objection to your starting destruction of papers within the criteria set out above as soon as you wish.
4. As you will know, we have yet to agree precisely how far in advance of 1 July 1997 the various functions currently carried out by HKID on our behalf should pass to the BTC, (as future Consulate General). But it makes sense that the relevant records should be transferred to the BTC at the same time as the functions to which they refer.
