6. The Hong Kong based FCO Procurement Unit was formed on 1

October 1990 from the earlier Crown Suppliers outstation and

supplies furnishings throughout the region.

Future Consulate-General:

7. OED, Hong Kong Department, BTC and British Council are working together to provide offices for the British

Consulate-General (including British Council) plus 9 units of junior staff residential accommodation. Negotiations on the

final details of the Private Treaty Grant of a site, cost

free, from HKG are nearing conclusion. Six major UK and HK

architectural practices have been invited to take part in a

design selection exercise for the new Consulate General

building: their design schemes are currently being assessed.

We expect to select one practice to finalise the design in early June. Swire Property Projects Limited have been appointed to act as Project Managers for the £22 million

scheme, in conjunction with OED: full sets of the design

schemes can be viewed at Swire's offices or BTC Hong Kong

Completion is planned for 1996.
