Attendance Note (1):
17 January 1985: 10.30am
Present:
Sir John Bremridge: Financial Secretary, Hong Kong Michael Thomas QC - Attorney General, Hong Kong Member of Attorney General's chambers Chooi Mun Sou: Committee of Enquiry
(Off the record discussion - very
frank)
He had his personal files, referred to note from Bowring from Hong Kong Bank, put in to save scheme, letter mid 1983 that Carrian could not be saved.
Said bluntly (to be denied) that Malaysian Government was covering up.
Referred to Tan Sri Gazali's (2) intervention through London, that Hong Kong Government using documents of Jalil's case for other purposes ( ) shoots off the hip.
Covering up for Razaleigh(3) Bank Bumi's behaviour to rescue disgraceful, showed me letter from George Tan to Lorrain Osman to hide special package for BMF, from the others and to destroy the letter. Gave me frank views on the following:
1.
Ewan Launder(4):
a crook on the fringe for a long time.
2.
John Marshall:
3.
George Tan:
can't be trusted. Don't believe a word of what he
says.
the crook of all time. Met him when Sir John was with Swire, didn't touch him, blackballed him.
4.
Sabine (4):
crook.
5.
Purves (4):
honest.
6.
Lorrain Osman / Shamsuddin:
no help from them.
On Perak Pioneer, he said that he felt there was justification at the present to appoint an inspector as there are so many other inspections. Hong Kong Government has spent HK$2.8 million (not counting the present trial). However the question of money does not come in when justice is concerned.
Attorney General intervened, referred to the excellent work of our committee (all done by Chooi he insisted) and then mentioned our working arrangements.
