I raised with you recently the question of BDTC HK being able to become BDTC Gibraltar if they were
take up residence here, in relation to the quota system introduced by UK to enable selected individuals to take up residence in UK.
My understanding was that the UK had agreed to issue British passports to those selected whilst they were still in Hong Kong.
You assured me that this was not the case and that in fact all they had been given
given was right of
right of abode in UK. Furthermore you said that the application for British citizenship could only be made after such an individual had exercised his right of abode and taken up residence in UK and five years had elapsed since he had elected to take up such residence. You were going to pursue the possibility of Gibraltar being able to benefit from
from this scheme by being able to count residence here on the same terms as residence in UK within the 42,000 quota.
I am assured by my contacts in HK that the scheme does not work as you explained it but as I had previously understood it. I am told that already British citizenship is in the process of being granted to the selected individuals within the quota without any of them having exercised the right of abode in UK. Obviously if this indeed the case then the 42,000 could chose to come Gibraltar as UK passport holders on the same basis as any other
community nationals without having to meet any special requirements as to income or net worth.
