You may recall that my deputy, Mr Hart, wrote to Simon Gass in the letter at Reference (copy attached for your convenience) outlining details of a proposal to provide secure speech facilities between Mr Patten in Hong Kong, and No 10 and the FCO here. of the available options the GREENHOUSE system was considered to be the most suitable.

We have received a number of oblique enquiries as to progress on the proposal and I should be grateful to know whether you are yet in a position to reply. I shall be away from the Office until 24 September, but Mr Hart will be able to provide any further information you may need.
