Conclusion

6 -

A great deal happening in the region. I have not

touched on the growth of ASEAN cooperation, China's new relationship with South Korea or regional

security concerns. But hope I have shown that

Britain remains centrally involved in Asia/Pacific

affairs. We will continue to do so, and Hong Kong

will remain at the centre of our regional interests.

A very high priority for the Government to see effective administration of Hong Kong until 1 July

1997, and a successful future beyond that. Hong Kong

will remain a lynch-pin of our Asian interests long

after that date. Investment we are making in a new

Consulate-General

which will be one of our largest

diplomatic posts anywhere in the world - a token of our intention to stay engaged.
