Hong Kong/Vietnam

Elsewhere in region, Hong Kong has strong interest in

opening up of Vietnam: not only given improved

prospects for resettlement of Vietnamese migrants, but because of economic opportunities.

Britain has put much effort into changing Vietnamese

policy on resettlement. Glad to see momentum being

maintained. Will be going there tomorrow. Aim to strengthen relationship with Vietnam in light of their economic reform.

In Hong Kong's interest to see a broader-based

relationship develop: and important investment

opportunities for you in Vietnam too.

Hong Kong/Japan

Japan a key economic partner for Hong Kong. I know that the Governor intends to make an early visit to

Tokyo.

We have made deepening of EC/Japanese relations a top priority for our Presidency. See a stable EC/Japan link as useful balance to the better developed

US/Japan axis.

Full and constructive regional role by the Japanese a shared interest for Britain and Hong Kong.
