Chris Patten has a vital job to do at a crucial time. Confident that he will do it well. His political experience and seniority will be to Hong Kong's advantage.

Relations with China

Always helful when countries like Australia with major interests in Hong Kong speal frankly to Chinese about what is needed to sustain confidence.

Progress on issues in the Joint Liaison Group continues to be slow but we are making some progress. Hong Kong will soon be signing its first Extradition Treaty (with the Netherlands) hope Agreement to the HK/Australian
