1. I attach a copy of a letter from Sir P Cradock asking for briefing for his next visit to Washington.

2. As you know, Sir P Cradock does not just cover the agencies, he gets access at a high level in State, NSC, etc.

3. I would be grateful if you and the other AUSSS to whom this minute is copied would call for briefs (not necessarily tailor-made) from your commands on subjects on which you think it would be useful for Sir P Cradock to have an FCO view.

4. If nearer the time there are operational questions on which we might wish Sir P Cradock to take action in Washington, I would be grateful if you (and others) would consult me. I will check with Sir P Cradock that he is prepared to take on our commissions and we would then provide an appropriate brief.

5. Briefs should be sent to Mr Howarth, who will act as the central collecting point in the FCO. They should reach him by close of play on 19 February.
