A Gratuity of 25 per cent of total basic salary will be paid by the Hong Kong Government on completion of the full period up to 30 June .1997. As the Governor's salary is not subject to Hong Kong tax, the
same will apply to the gratuity. Early payment will be made on a pro rata basis in the event of death, ill health precipitating retirement or if the agreement is mutually resolved before the normal term expires.
Medical and dental treatment will be provided free of charge for you and your family at public hospitals and Hong Kong Government clinics. A small fee is charged for certain minor items (ie food in hospitals) and for dental appliances. If in the opinion of local doctors medical evacuation is the recommended course of action, the costs of any such medical evacuation will be borne by the FCO under the terms of the FCO Health Care Scheme.
The cost of running Government House and a country residence (upkeep and maintenance of buildings, furnishings and grounds, electricity, water, telephones, official cars, wages etc) and the cost of the Governor's staff are met from Hong Kong Government funds.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office will pay passages for you, your spouse and accompanying dependants on first appointment and at the end of the appointment, together with the cost of 700 cubic feet of heavy baggage, car freight and transit insurance for your car and personal effects. The FCO will pay for 60 kg unaccompanied air freight each for you and your spouse and 60 kg for the first dependant child resident at post and 40 kg each for any further dependant children resident at Post.
The grant of leave is at the discretion of the Secretary of State. The amount of leave will not normally exceed that provided for senior officers by the local leave regulations. At present 45 days' overseas leave per annum is granted with first-class passages at Hong Kong Government expense for the Governor, his spouse and dependant children resident in Hong Kong. There is also provision for local leave up to 10 working days.
A Local education allowance is payable for dependant children under the age of 19 undertaking full-time education in Hong Kong. The maximum rate for secondary education 1-3 (ages 11-13) is HK$28,950 per academic year per child. Officers are responsible for the first 25 per cent of the tuition fee.
The Hong Kong Government will pay an overseas education allowance for dependant children between the ages of 9 and 19 undertaking full time education in an approved education centre in the United Kingdom. The maximum boarding school rate is respect of senior school is £5,470 per academic year per child, and the day school rate £638 per academic year per child.
