The Charter of the United Nations (text at Annex
which established the organization of the United Nations
and sets out its constitutional structure and procedures
signed on 26 June 1945, in San Francisco, and came into
force on 24 October 1945. Article 1 of the Charter sets
was
out the main purposes of the United Nations which are to
international peace and security; to develop
relations among nations based on respect for the
principle of equal rights and self-determination of
maintain
friendly
peoples; to achieve
international
humanitarian
international cooperation in solving
problems of an economic, social, cultural or
character,
and promoting and
encouraging
respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all
without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion;
and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations
in the attainment of these common ends. The Statute of the
International Court of Justice (text at Annex B) is an
integral part of the Charter and governs the composition
and procedures
of the International Court of Justice which
is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
