Hong Kong

16. Tai began to raise Hong Kong issues but I said that Mr

X Ricketts had had a long meeting with Michael Wei and had

reported fully to HKG * I emphasised that most if not all the

Tai topics raised were for HKG to deal with and not us. nevertheless said that he hoped that John Ni's office could change its name from Chunghwa Travel Agency. I repeated that this was for HKG. He said that Ni had recently asked to resign because he had been unable to carry out his remit of "modernising" the outlook of the old guard KMT in Hong Kong. But Ni had been persuaded to stay on.

APAG

17. At one point Tai referred to APAG as an excellent initiative. I did not rise to the bait about the DTI reception, but commented that not all businessmen were happy with the new arrangement, though DTI (and FCO) were determined to make it work.
