like a practical solution to a long-standing problem.

11. I briefed Tai. He had seen the FT article about Mr Allan Stewart's plans. He may wish to contact Mr Stewart nearer the time. I was not drawn on this point. emphasised (as did Sir W Bentley the need for a low profile reception like that given to Mr Redwood, ie no, calls on the Foreign Minister, Prime Minister and President).

Tai was receptive and noted this down carefully. He agreed that it was in both our interests that such business-like visits should continue and that they should not be encountered as unnecessary brouhaha.

12.

On Lady Thatcher, Tai had been delighted to have lunch with her recently. He emphasised how warmly his Prime Minister and President regarded Lady Thatcher. James Soong, Secretary General KMT, was likely to be in Europe in the autumn and might if invited, attend the Conservative Party Conference. (I made no comment but there could be some awkwardness in this). Tai said that Taiwan would be joining the IDU soon.

Action: Mr Welsh to advise, perhaps after discussing with Special Advisers, about IDU pant and visit of Soong.

13. I mentioned Earle Ho's visit (Taiwan Aerospace Corporation) and hoped that this would lead to satisfactory collaboration between TAC and BAe. Tai will attend the BAe lunch on 29 July. He undertook to press Ho to reach a satisfactory arrangement. He made no comment about calls on government Ministers or Departments. He commented that the MacDonald Douglas deal had fallen through.

14. I noted that Mr Needham had encouraged Tai to bring over a high level Taiwan trade mission in the autumn next year. Tai said that this would need much more thought. He had made this point to Mr Love and Mr Simmons.

15. Sir W Bentley said that Tai had asked him for his views about whether a Taiwan European Heads of Mission Conference might be held in London. Sir W Bentley had discouraged this as being a bit too sensitive. I left it at that, commenting that Ambassador Ma had held his own conference here last week.
