DGT said that the US intended to hold three to four SOMs under its chairmanship. Tentative venues for the SOMs included Washington D. C., Seattle and Hawaii. Kristoff had sounded him out earlier on the idea of holding one SOM in Hong Kong under APEC V. He understood that this was the request of other APEC members in view of the long travelling distance from Asia to the US. The SOM would be organised by the USCG and the American Chamber of Commerce.

Qin said that it was his personal view that this would not pose Good a problem for China. It was good for Hong Kong to host international meetings. PGT said that if a formal US request were received, Hong Kong would need to respond reasonably quickly. Qin undertook to revert to DGT with a considered view as soon as possible.
VISIT TO BEIJING

DGT said that he might visit Beijing in end October. He would have discussions with MOFERT on matters such as GATT. Qin said that he would like to see DGT on this occasion, if possible. DGT noted.
